Located in the Northern parts of Karnataka, Koppal as a district, houses regions with the 2nd largest agriculture produce in the state. It has a marketing committee at Gangavati driving agriculture from the front. The district consists of 4 talukas Koppal, Gangavathi, Kushtagi, and Yelburga along with one the biggest Sarovars in India. It has a literacy rate of 78.54%.

Economic Snapshot

Koppal’s total GDP stands at INR 79.41 billion, contributing 2.7% to state GSDP. It’s per capita annual income in the district being INR. 82, 954. However, the GDDP trend has been growing at a strong 21% CAGR from 2007-08 to 2012-13; with the Industry segment emerging as the highest contributors at 4.1% with 34.28 billion for 2012-13.

Agriculture in Focus

Koppal is an agriculture based economy with 2nd largest produce in the state. Its major food crops are Paddy, Maize, Jowar, and Bajra. The Horticulture produces like Pomegranate, Grape, Banana, Mango, Brinjal, Tomato, Onion, Green Chili, Ridge-Guard and Flowers like Crossandra, Jasmine, Chrysanthemum, Rose and Marigold. The district also grows Cash crops like Groundnut and Sugarcane with Plantation crops like Betel Vine, Coconut and Oil Palm. These ensure thrust on food processing industries creating a value chain of industries across the produce in the region.

Industrial Landscape

The Industry is a thriving force at Koppal. A proposed rice technology park is set to add momentum to the food processing industries here. Tissue culture in Banana to identify better yields than the local varieties and establishing of soil and water analysis laboratory and leaf analysis unit in the district will help the farmer to select suitable crops for cultivation and to identify the nutritional disorders of the crop are a felt need in the district
Power generation is a focus area in Koppal with a Mini Hydel power unit at Shivapura, Koppal taluk; one wind power generation unit in Hanumansagar, Kushtagi Taluk and Three Biomass power units in Gangavathi Taluk made available
Koppal houses 27 Large and Medium scale Industries along with 6,047 small-scale industries with aggregated investment INR 1.528 billion. These industries are well served by 1 Industrial area and 1 Industrial Estate located in the district. Two more Industrial estates 104 and 100 acres in Koppal and Yelburga respectively are proposed to augment the infrastructure in the region.
Plans are on to build Steel Ancillary Units across 154.39 acres with KAIDB acquiring the land at Basapura Village. However 64.28 acre land for developing Granite Industries and a 250 acre Granite Cluster/Park is proposed in Kushtagi Taluk.


Land and Soil

Koppal has varied agro-climatic regions suitable to grow many horticultural crops. It has 2% of the cultivated land allotted for fruit crops, with vegetables at 2%, oilseeds with 20%, 18% spice and582% Cereals complete the net sown area profile in the region.
The natural resource especially Synite Brittle, Pink Panther, Coronado, Green Quartz and Building stones are found in this region.

Water Reserves

The River Tungabhadra is the perennial river flowing across the district through Gangavati, Koppal and Kushtagi taluks. It helps irrigate nearly 31% of the cultivable land in the region mainly by the Tungabhadra Canal, Ground water and minor irrigation facilities like Bore wells and other dug wells

Power Supply

Transmission to the district is done by Kalaburgi (Gulbarga) Electricity Supply Company Ltd while power generation is handled by various organizations like NTPC, KPCL etc. It receives power from both Raichur Thermal Power Station and Ballari (Bellary) Thermal Power Station.
Koppal is high on alternate power generation and has one Hydro Electric power unit, one wind power unit and 3 biomass units.

Knowledge Capital

Koppal is widely recognized for imparting excellent education and has a good number of educational institutes with 73 Pre-University Colleges, 23 Degree College, 7 Polytechnics with 2 Engineering, 1 Medical and 1 Ayurvedic Medical College.
Some of the prominent educational institutions and training centers include Koppal Nursing Colleges, Jagadguru Sree Gavisiddeshwara Ayurvedic College, Sardar Vallabhai Patel B. Ed College and Janatha Seva ITI.

The civic infrastructure for healthcare is well spread and catered across by 45 Primary Healthcare Centers and 63 Government Hospitals and 9 Community Centers along with 4 Indian System of Medicine Hospitals in the district.

Connectivity

Koppal is well connected across Road, Rail, Air, and Sea. Two national highways NH13 and NH 63 go through the district and a Bengaluru (Bangalore) -Ballari (Bellary) -Gadag-Hubballi (Hubli) Railway Line passes through Koppal Town and aids connects to all major cities across India. The district has access to 4 International Airport Bengaluru (Bangalore), Mangaluru (Mangalore), Goa and Hyderabad along with 2 Domestic airport. It has port access from Goa and Karwar, Mangaluru (Mangalore) and Krishnapatnam sea ports.
