Known as the Rice Bowl of India, Raichur has the only gold manufacturing unit in the country and the nation’s most efficient thermal power plant. The district is set to energize its further growth with a Solar Photo Voltaic power plant and a proposed special Industrial zone.
The district is located in eastern part of Karnataka and is spread across 5 talukas - Devadurga, Lingasugur, Manvi, Raichur and Sindhanur. The district has a literacy rate of 59.56%

Economic Snapshot

Raichur’s total GDP is INR 52.12 billion contributing 1.745%to state GSDP and the per capita annual income in the district is INR.47, 752. However, the GDDP trend is a steady 5% CAGR from 2007-08 to 2012-13; with the Agriculture and Allied segment emerging as the highest contributors at 3.15%.

Agriculture in Focus

Raichur cultivation is heavily tilted in producing cereals with 49.58% of sown area focused here, 22.27% is allotted for Pulses and another 17.93% for Oilseeds. Raichur district ranks first in Mosambi /Sweet Lime production in the state. The other horticulture produce in the district are Brinjal, Chilli, Cucumber, Gourds, and Leafy vegetables, with Mango, Pomegranate and Papaya.

Industrial Landscape

Raichur has 10 Large and Medium - scale Industries and 9,777 small-scale industries with aggregated investment INR 7.29 billion. 4 industrial areas and 4 industrial estates service the needs of the region. 6,285 acres of land is further identified for creating new industrial areas in Signodi – Yergara.
Raichur prides in its legacy, the KPC (Karnataka Power Corporation) Thermal Power Station which generates about 48% of the power supply of the state. This 1,470 MW thermal station is ISO 14001-2004 certified for its environment protection measures. In continuation of the effort, KPC is to invest INR 20.16 billion to establish a Solar Photo Voltaic power plant with a capacity of 3 MW.
This move is set to augment more developments with GoK already setting up a Power Generation Zone in the region and proposing Special Industrial Zone for Steel industries. Some of the other projects like Manufacturing of Pig Iron, Integrated Steel Plant, Ore pelletizing have also been approved by the High-Level Committee (HLC).
Raichur has 15% of its SSI units engaged in textile based activities. The established trading market for cotton and the leather products cluster activity adds impetus to these industries in the region
The agro-based food processing sector is also a thrust area with the district known as the ‘Rice Bowl’ of India, 438,045 ha of land is used for the cultivation of Paddy with over 100 rice milling industries. Raichur exports Agriculture Products to European Countries and has good support infrastructure like APMC yards with 2 units of KSWC Ltd. and KMF. A multipurpose cold storage of 5000 MT capacity in the district enhances the ecosystem here.


Land and Soil

Raichur district has a total land area of 8,442 sq. km with 5.29% of uncultivated land and 2.17% of forest cover with major utilization is for agriculture 63.40% with the remaining area of 29.14% available.

Water Reserves

Raichur has 2 main rivers Krishna and Tungabhadra flowing in the district and aids irrigational needs in the region. The district has a total supply capacity of 70 MLD and accounts for 35.23% of the area irrigated.
The average demand and supply for water are well balanced in the region as per the KUWSSB with average demand and consumption both in the industry and the domestic segment being equal. i.e. Industry demand and consumption of water supply are 15 MLD and Domestic demand for water supply and consumption is 55MLD that is met by the region’s resources.

Power Supply

The main source of Power generation for Raichur is Raichur Thermal Power Plant. Kalaburgi (Gulbarga) Electricity Supply Company Limited GESCOM is responsible for the power transmission to the district. The demand for power in the region averages around 120 MW for both industry and domestic segment whereas the power consumption in the region stands at 90 MU for Industry and 80 MU for the Domestic sector.

Knowledge Capital

Raichur has educational institutions across the entire gamut including, General, Professional. Technical and Primary education catering to the education needs of the people in the region. Niche institutes for Agriculture, research and even specialized tool room training institutes are available in the region.

Some of the important institutions include Academy of Medical Education’s Dental College & Hospital, NET Pharmacy College, University of Agricultural Sciences-Raichur, Raichur Institute of Medical Sciences, S. L. N College of Engineering, Laxmi Venkatesh Desai College, Infant Jesus D.Ed College, College of Agricultural Engineering, Division of Oil Seeds Research Station, Centre of Government Tool Room Training and Navodaya Institute of Medical Science.

Medical Resources

The civic infrastructure in Raichur is wholesome with 53 Primary Healthcare Centers and 21 Indian System of Medicine Hospitals; it also has 64 Government hospitals and 52 Community Health Centers geared up to meet the needs of the district.

Raichur is highly accessible across Road, Rail, Air and Sea. NH67 and 1005 kms of State Highways across 4 routes interconnect across the taluks to add a definite advantage. Raichur is connected by rail to Bengaluru-Chennai-Trivandrum-Hyderabad-Bhuvaneshwar-Mumbai-Ahmedabad-New Delhi, etc.
It has high access to 3 International and 2 Domestic airports with Hyderabad being the closest and 4 major seaports with Goa being closest for the region.
