Chikaballapur is a newly carved district out of Kolar in the southern part of the state, with a potential to be a Greater Bengaluru. It provides for a high degree of connectivity and is a key transport link to North Bengaluru due to the origin of several national highways and is both a regional transport and educational hub too.

It is spread across 6 Talukas - Gowribidanur, Gudibande, Begepalli, Sidlaghatta, Chintamani and Chikkaballapur - the district headquarter, that's a mere 50 km away from Bengaluru (Bangalore). The district has a literacy rate of 69.76%

Economic Snapshot

Chikaballapur's total GDP is INR 35.25 billion contributing 1.1% to state GSDP. It's per capita annual income in the district being INR.44, 183. However, the GDDP trend is 3% CAGR from 2007-8 to 2012-13; with the agriculture and allied industries at the top with 2.7% contributions.

Agriculture in Focus

Chikaballapur devotes 60% of its cultivated land to produce Cereals, 13% to oilseeds and 7% to Pulses; with varied horticulture crops like Grapes, Mango, Sapota, Pomegranate, Guava, Papaya, Citrus varieties, Potato, Tomato, Cabbage, Carrot, Brinjal, Beans, Green, Chillies, Radish, Onions, Ginger, Coriander, Tamarind, Dry Chillies, Betel vine, Rose, Marigold, Jasmine, Chrysanthemum, Crossandra, Gladiolus, Tube rose, Bird of paradise form the rest 20%.

Industrial Landscape

Chikaballapur is the commercial center and hub for silk industry. It's the second largest district practicing sericulture with the average cocoon production higher than the state. Here the average cocoon production is higher than the state average with Mulberry cultivated in 16361 Ha covering 25531 families in the district of Chikaballapur. The district achieves annual income generation of about INR 1770 Million.

Livestock rearing is an established activity in the district with approximately 0.7 million liters of milk production per day. Ample scope for poultry and meat production along with agriculture and allied activities like horticulture nurseries to provide quality planting material and huge scope for major horticulture produce like grapes is on the anvil. The urban market in Bengaluru (Bangalore) adds to the prospects of food processing and floriculture sector here. The proximity of University of Agricultural Science campus in Bengaluru (Bangalore) offers better infrastructure and opportunity to introduce new crop species medicinal, aromatic and dry yielding plants suitable to the arid region here.

Two Large and Medium scale Industries with aggregated investment INR 4.29 billion and 7,372 small-scale industries with aggregated investment INR 24.839 billion are well served by 2 Industrial Area and 5 Industrial Estates. 1,525 Acres Land Bank is identified and notified in Chintamani and Bagepalli Taluks all set to propel and emerge as a Greater Bengaluru (Bangalore) region.

Land and Soil

Chikaballapur has 12% of land as forest cover, 33% uncultivable land and 3% remaining land as they cultivate a net land of 52% only. The soil is suitable for different crops with varied Agro climatic conditions. The district has natural reserves of White Quartz mineral here.

Water Reserves

Chikaballapur has three rivers - Papagni, Chitravathi and Pinakini which form the major part of the 3.5 MLD total water supplied to the region. The district Per Capita Water Supply is 42 LPCD.

Power Supply

BESCOM or Bengaluru (Bangalore) Electricity Supply Company Limited is handling power transmission to the district of Chikaballapur even as power generation is under various agencies like NTPC, KPCL etc.
Average demand for power in the district for Industries is 162.8 Mu & Domestic is 106.30 Mu, However the average consumption differs with Industries using 95.33 Mu & Domestic consuming a lot at 159.33 Mu

Knowledge Capital

Chikaballapur educational institutions are growing to include 12 Degree colleges, 7 ITI’s, 3 Engineering colleges and 5 Polytechnics in the district. However, two premier institutes Visvesvaraya Institute of Advanced Technology and National Skill Development Institute proposed at Muddenhalli and Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Gowribidanur are set to enhance its status to a growing educational hub in the state.

Medical Resources

The basic civic necessity of good healthcare is available in Chikaballapur. The district has 56 Primary healthcare centers 65 Government hospitals and 115 Private Hospitals, Nursing homes and Clinics meet the healthcare needs in the region.


The support Infrastructure is well laid out to offer a high degree of connectivity in the region. By road, it has accesses across National Highway NH7 and NH 234 with Rail route connecting it to all major cities. It has easy access to 3 international airports and 2 domestic airport plus the Mangaluru (Mangalore) Karwar, Goa and Chennai seaports too.
