Udupi is set to redefine business in a temple town. A haven for financial sectors, a birth place of 4 major public sector banks, with a high security printing of shares certificates and cheque books located here. The largest grower of Cashew nuts and exporter of Jasmine flowers, Udupi offers’ high focus on food processing sector too backed by fisheries in this coastal region.
Located in southern Karnataka; it is carved out of Dakshina Kannada district, it is spread across 3 Talukas namely Udupi, Kundapura and Karkala. The district has 86.29% literacy rate.

Economic Snapshot

Udupi’s total GDP stands at INR 69.02 billion contributing 2.3% to state GSDP. Its per capita annual income in the district is INR.83, 679. However, the GDDP trend has been growing at 6.3% CAGR from 2007-08 to 2012-13; with Agriculture and Allied industries sector being the highest contributors at 2.5% for 2012-13.

Agriculture in Focus

Udupi is an Agriculture and Allied services economy with over 23.91% of the net area under cultivation. Its major crop is Paddy. Pulse varieties grown include Black gram, Horse gram, Green Gram, Cowpeas, with Groundnut, Sesame and Sugarcane being the other major Commercial Crops. Major fruits grown are Mango, Banana, Pineapple, Jack Fruit and Sapota. Plantation crops include Coconut, Areca nut and Cashew nut.

Industrial Landscape

Udupi has a strong banking sector owing to the incorporation presence of major players like Vijaya Bank, Canara Bank, Corporation Bank and Syndicate Bank in the district. It has the highest density of banking branch offices in the state (Scheduled Commercial Banks) well augmented by the printing press performing high security printing like cheques, share certificates etc.
The Agro Processing industry has a list of positive that’s sure to vitalize the sector with focus. Abundant raw material, high accessibility to the region, skilled labor, technical institutes, market leader in production of cashew and exports of jasmine and a climatic condition ideal for perennial horticultural and medicinal plants.

The district has 108 Kms. of coastal line supported by 1500 mechanized fishing fleets, 3000 energized country crafts and one major harbor viz., Malpe port that is well exploited by 4 processing and freezing units, 2 canning plants, 6 fishmeal plants, 78 Ice Plants, 12 boat building addas and 3 net making plants topped by the presence of Fisheries College at Mangalore, for research and extension activities.
Udupi has a keen eye on sectors like Information Technology, Engineering and Ship building; these sectors have set precedence with renowned corporate companies like Suzlon Infrastructure ltd or Synefra Engg and Construction ltd; Robosoft Technologies and Tebna Shipyards operating here.
Tourism, textiles, metal works are inherent areas for potential development akin to the presence of Manipal Group’s world class education hub in Medicine, Engineering and Management, which is set to fuel the region’s growth.

Land and Soil

Udupi has varied agro-climatic regions suitable to grow many horticultural crops. The district has a total land area of 356,446 ha with 23.91% under cultivation and 24.52% of forest cover. It has of 35.84% other uncultivated land along with 15.73% remaining land.
The district has natural deposits of Silica Sand, Bauxite, Lime Shell, Ornamental Stones, Building Stone and Ordinary Clay

Power Supply

Power transmission in the district is being done by Mangaluru (Mangalore) Electricity Supply Company Limited (MESCOM). However Udupi power is generated at an imported coal-based thermal power project in Udupi District with capacity 2 X 600 MW (1200 MW)
The district total power supply is 300 MVA, while the average demand is 118 MW and the average annual consumption is - 69.199 MU

Knowledge Capital

Udupi is renowned for its educational network and has a comprehensive offering with 73 PU Colleges, 22 Degree Colleges, 6 Polytechnic colleges, with 4 Engineering College, 3 Medical Colleges and 1 Teacher’s Training College. On a high note is The Manipal Academy of Higher Education – The Manipal University in the district is an international education hub excelling in the fields of Medicine, Engineering and Management. The district also has other key institutions of higher learning such as Nitte Educational Trust, Canara School of Nursing and Vaikunta Baliga College of Law amongst others.

Udupi is well connected across Road, Rail Air and Sea. A broad gauge rail route of 100 km of Konkan Rail Line with 6 Railway station, 3 National Highway NH66, NH 17 and NH13, provides accessibility to Bangalore, Goa, Chennai Hyderabad, Mumbai and Pune.
Mangaluru (Mangalore) port proximity with Karwar and Goa port are the closest and the air connect is accessed via Bengaluru (Bangalore) International Airport and 5 other airports Mangaluru (Mangalore), Hubballi( Hubli), Mysuru (Mysore), Belagavi (Belgaum) and Goa which ensure high accessibility for trade and commerce.

Udupi is infrastructure ready with 2 major SEZ in the region. The 614.30 acre Mangalore SEZ for Hi tech engineering products by Synefra Engineering & Construction, formerly known as Suzlon Infrastructure Ltd., already has SE Composites Limited an European aerodynamics technology based wind turbine component manufacturer and Suzlon Wind International Limited - a German engineering equipped technology based wind turbine component manufacturer.

The other SEZ is ISPRL (Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserves Ltd.) FTWZ SEZ in Padur created to ensure energy security, the Government of India had decided to set up 5 million metric tons (MMT) of strategic crude oil storages to serve as a cushion in response to external supply disruptions.
